Over break i came up w/ this character design. i really liked it and thought he'd be a cool character to animate for my demo reel. hope you all like it! :)

modeling - 1 hour
rigging - 4 hours
skinning - 1 1/2 hours

3d max 8 / default render

I really hope you didn't make a bone system for this character...
You could have saved yourself 6 hours by just linking the parts together and throwing in some ctrls.

meh didn't think about that. but do u mean to just add ctrls to all the joint areas? cause if so, i still think bones would be a better idea since using ctrls in the joint areas would be sorta a FK setup and i'd rather animate w/ IK

When you link objects it puts them in a hierarchy, which is exactly what bones use. So once in a hierarchy you can easily set up an IK rig with the objects. Bones are just simple objects to control one whole mesh, if you already have multiple objects, there is no use for bones. Just link them, and create an IK wire.
